Minoru Inaba on Muteki (No Enemy)

In the martial arts world, 無敵 (muteki) is often translated to 'invincible' or 'unbeatable'. The reason for this is because it is written using the kanji for 'nothing' which is 無 (mu) and the kanji for 'enemy' which is 敵 (teki)... literally it is 'no enemy'

In the martial arts sense, in order to have any enemies, you have to be the strongest and everybody will submit to you, fear you, nobody dares to raise their arms against you... This may be true... until a stronger opponent comes along...

On the other hand, in a spiritual/philosophical sense, you don't perceive anybody or anything as enemies therefore you have no enemies, even when you are attacked you still don't call them your enemies...

An enemy becomes an enemy only when you call them or perceive them as an enemy... but if you go beyond these relative boundaries then you have no enemies because there is no need to perceive anything as enemies...

Example, you left your mobile phone carelessly on a table at a food-court.. . you suddenly remembered about it and rushed back but it is already gone... you immediately said that it has been stolen and a thief has taken it... and you curse the person that took your mobile phone

In this example you have declared that somebody is a thief, making somebody a thief... yes, you could argue that the person that took the mobile phone is a thief... again that's a judgment... but compare it to the next scene...

Same issue, your mobile phone went missing under the above circumstances, but there is a different in your attitude... you have taken it as your fault on being careless and you have accepted that your mobile phone is gone... and wish that anybody who now have it good will and hope that the mobile phone could make a good contribution in that person's life...

Great difference.. . you reflect on yourself why the mobile phone went missing and you did not make anybody a thief...

I was inspired by a story told about a senior student of O'sensei that lost his new jacket and suspected somebody at the dojo stole his jacket. O'sensei advised the student that a thief is only a thief if one makes one a thief... and that the student must refelect upon himself on why the jacket went missing...

It is the same concept with muteki, even when somebody hate you, you don't hate them back, thus not making any enemies. Others could perceive you as their enemy, but you don't have to be sucked into the same relativity.. . you could make the concept of enemy disappear...

In true budo, you do what you need to do not because of hatred but because it is just the way things are... you respect the person that has become your opponent, you feel no hatred for him, he fights for his cause and you fight for yours... you don't perceive him as your enemy... but there is a process that you will need to see yourself through in dealing with this... As there is no enemy, there is no concept of winning or losing... in the end, everything that lives must die...

In the warring states period, the loyalty was to your lord... and this becomes your prime motivation.. . you will still think for a higher cause... the group needs versus your needs... but it is still limited because the motivation is still of this relative world...

As spirituality comes in, the cause became no longer of this relative world... and no longer bounded by time and space... and death is just another process that life will go through... nothing really ends... it just changes...

Knowing a higher purpose that surpasses the boundaries of time and space, you no longer need enemies, no need for relative victory... and thus not making anybody as your opponent but just as they should be... a part of this relative universe...
